Bring your own sack lunch to these complimentary events and we will provide drinks, dessert, and a great discussion. This semester, professionals may earn Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for $20 per workshop. Participants requiring CEU’s must submit their license number when registering for the event. Just too SAD? (January 24, 2012)
Seasonal Affective Disorder is thought to effect about 5% of the US population, with less than 2% prevalence in Florida and about 9% in Alaska. The Pursuit of Perfection (February 23, 2012)

Then What? – Finding calm through convictions! (March 6, 2012)
Emotional wellness prompts us to know our hearts and minds. Spiritual practices prepare us for our happiest days and harshest trials. While our days are finite, death need not complete our destiny. Lessons drawn from traditional wells can guide our grief. Our discussion will explore how Jewish afterlife concepts bolster various points of view when facing Eternity. The Teenage Brain (April 10, 2012)
This presentation will deal with the developmental challenges facing teens and their parents. Parents will learn tips for communicating more effectively with their teens and will understand why the “attitude” is a normal part of their development. Understanding the developments in the teen brain will help parents understand the potential and challenges teens face as they continue to grow. Parents will also learn how to refashion the relational covenant they have with their teens. Living With Addictions: Watch out for what you’re “-ing!” What it means when “addiction” is present in your life. If Ecclesiastes was right and there is a time and place for everything, what is “addiction” doing in my space? What changes move addiction along or keep it right at home? Ask the Doctor What have you always wondered or wanted to know about “mental illness?” How can you tell if someone is clinically depressed or simply has “the blues?” What is the best way to suggest professional mental health services to a friend or member of your congregation? What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist? How can I help? Please recognize that Dr. Preston is a clinical psychologist, not a mental doctor, and therefore questions regarding medications cannot be answered. Assertiveness: Speaking the Truth In Love Learn the difference between passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive and assertive behaviors as well as methods to determine when and how to best be assertive. Non-verbal communication and proper use of “I statements” are also discussed in the lecture/practice format. Come join Marie A. The Psycho Biological Basis for Depression and Anxiety If you or a family member suffers from depression or anxiety you may have wondered about what causes these disorders. This presentation will look at both environmental and neurological causes of depression and anxiety. The role of nutrition, sleep, stress and exercise will be explored in maintaining a healthy brain chemistry. Ways of coping with mild depression and anxiety will be covered as well as warning signs that you or a loved one might benefit from talking to your doctor about medication.
